self reflection

ENG 102

7 December 2016

When I was thinking about going back to school.  I dreaded the thought of having to take English 102.  I have always had trouble with English composition.  My two main confidence breakers are my grammar, and how long it takes me to organize my thoughts into a paper.  I came to class the first day worried about how much time this class is going to take up in my life and very anxious just to get a passing grade.

I am very relieved that I had a much better experience in this class than I thought I would.  The first doubt I had about my expectation of this class is when we wrote down what we wanted to get from English 102 and what we did not like about English classes, on a small white square paper. The impression I received from a teacher that considers their student’s weaknesses and reinforces that there is not a need to worry was slightly untrusting.  The next few days of class I began to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and the different learning styles that were tended to.  I still felt that I shouldn’t let my guard down and if I had more free time than I expected I should try to work ahead on assignments.  Having the assignments posted on the calendar for the entire months, brought more relief as I was able to plan and guess how much time I would need to complete the assignments.   Referring to the syllabus to read the first few assignments helped me further gauge what kind of time commitment I got myself into.  I found that balancing this class with life was not going to be as much trouble as I thought.  I also began to feel more confident when I learned that my papers were not ‘just marked up’.  It was very helpful to have peer reviews and comment from the teacher that were really helpful.  I’m glad I got the teacher I did because I feel more confident now.  I know that in the future when I write papers I need to try to organize them better and that I need to be careful of using commas.

Thank you for being flexible, and giving me a much better experience than were my expectations.  Hope to see you around, and I hope you’re okay with me still using you at a resource for my other papers in next semester.
