“Effective communication is an important life skill that enables us to better understand and

Susan W. Goodwyn, Linda P. Acredolo and Catherine A. Brown. Impact of Symbolic Gesturing on
Early Language Development, Journal of Nonverbal Behavior, pg. 81-82, (2000).
<http://faculty.washington.edu/sommej/Goodwynetal2000.pdf>. Summariy: she conducted a test
between verbal children with signing support, strictly verbal children, and children with extra
verbal support.  her research says that “Non-intervention Control group indicated an advantage            for the Sign Training group on the vast majority of language acquisition measures. These results
provide strong evidence that symbolic gesturing does not hamper verbal development and may
even facilitate it. A variety of possible explanations for such an effect are discussed. “ How I plan
     to use it: Paraphrase/Quote

Speech and sign should go together but may not flow at the same pace therefore words can be omitted. About 1-year-old children are missing sounds for other languages, but have only tuned into their language relative sounds. Child directed talk is when adults change speech patterns to "talk" to children. How I plan to use it: Paraphrase

Do we help children to speak?                    Summary: Refers to many research on how a child learns language. Research contradicts and              supports and personal analysis thus far is that specific learning of language is still a mystery.               Roger Brown and Catherine Snow research supports personal idea that “presetting sentences in a        special way to children will feed them info to make it easier to learn the language” the book also        references Helen Keller as an example.  How I plan to use it: Summary/Paraphrase/Quote

Spanglish Summary

We can understand Spanglish even though it is not our language. Spanglish is cross between Spanish and English. It gets picked up mainly from children or TV.  Spanglish is used to simplify sentences. It can be different depending on location.  A city on one end of the country could speak Spanglish differently than the opposite side of the country. People are keeping the simpler words or phrases from each language and merging the languages together. Spanish is usually elected in high school , so even though we, English speakers may not think we know Spanish we are a least familiar with it.  The hybrid language has increased the last ten years.  Latinos use Spanglish in transitioning to and from languages.  Spanglish is more time efficient so it is being used more. Spanglish has connected two cultures. Advertisers are trying to hit the $134 billion cross market by advertising in Spanglish.

Complain about..

Minimum wage increase -- What the hell? What are people thinking? 12 dollars for Minimum Wage?! I don't get it.   So, okay, we all like money.  but where is this money coming from? So you get 12 dollars a hour, guess what happens to your rent? and your clothes, and your movie tickets? Guess what happens to the cost of living in flagstaff?  Rent is already at 1600 dollars for a 2 bedroom 990 sqft apartment.  BOTH OF my paychecks won't cover rent and utilities.  My Health Insurance that my employer pays 80% for already has gone up 100-150 dollars a month.  How do you expect the community to support a 12 dollar minimum wage? OOOOH, yes, I forgot.. The NAU students.  They will pay for whatever they need because they can add it to a load or have their parent's help them out because they are 'college kids'.   I was looking at an ADDITIONAL job .. as in SECOND FULL TIME job ( I already have a very part-time gig on top of my full time job).  just to cover my insurance, and now it looks like I will most definitely need a second full time job to pay for rent and gas, and utilities.      Who voted for this prop?  They need a hit in the head with an economics book.  Are they seeing a different outcome?... what are they seeing?  ... this is ridiculous.   I thought of trying to get my full time job to open a compressed work shift so that we can also work a second job, because my full time employer has denied cost of living increases, since forever!  I DON"T GET HOW TO LIVE HERE?   What do people do?!?!
