James Bond - Adaptations

Adaptation of James Bond "From Russia with Love"

"From Russia with Love" has been adapted from a book (written in 1957) into a comic in 1960 then into a film in 1963.  It was a second Bond film that starred Sean Connery as Bond.  The film also had a soundtrack. The book was also adapted into a video game along with a Radio drama. The radio drama released in 2012.  These adaptions came along probably because the film was successful, the most popular in the British box office, enough to prove that extra money could be made by creating different adaptations.  Having different media mediums helps make the story more accessible for different audiences. Comic, video games, films can make the story more entertaining.  If one media gets old to a person, they can switch it up to another and enjoy a new spin on the story.  Each alternate piece can create a different feeling about the story as a whole, so to keep with the true spirit of the original, there must be certain events that happen that remind the audience of the main characters or plots and the original excitement they experienced.

Reader Response to Contextual Analysis Essay

__________
1. I'm not sure I understand his intention. I'm not sure if I'm following what he is saying.  Is he saying there can never be equality? Maybe, he is pointing out that politics is trying to tell us how to have a inter-racial relationships?
2. & 3. I think he focuses on the 'facade' of black/white friendships and the relationships of black and whites. He also focuses on how black history is minimized and true emotions that could actually connect and unify us are passed over. He believes that media/politics is trying to conform and define how black/white relationships are suppose to look like. He thinks that the media is trying to fix racism by minimizing the blacks history (ignoring it?). That black-white relationships are being forced by media, politics and guilt.
4.  What are the features of the text that are discussed by the author?  Black & white american's relationships, well-fare associated with guilt, black statistics vs white statistics...
5.  What are the intended effects of the text?  (Generally considered by the audience) to show another way of thinking about the differences between blacks and whites. This other way being, rather than conforming to the just accepting ways of equality that the media and politics define, we try to build real connections and understandings.   (?)
6.  What are the unintended effects of the text as identified by the author of the essay? I have a question, I guess, that is in what generations will there be same-ness, then?

Grammar Girl #3 - episode 463

1.  What I know:
I don't know what this means. I don't know what Parallel structure refers to.

2.  Grammar Girl Episode #463

http://www.quickanddirtytips.com/education/grammar/how-to-use-parallel-construction-correctly

3 & 4.  http://www.dailywritingtips.com/5-sentences-with-problematic-parallelism-in-lists/
1. “The writer will sit, eat, and interview the subject.”
It seems more logical for the writer to interview the subject after being seated but before eating him or her, but whatever. If the intended meaning of the statement is that the writer will dine with the subject rather than cannibalistically consume him or her, however, the sentence should be revised as follows: “The writer will sit and eat with, and interview, the subject.” Better yet, for a smoother flow to the sentence, introduce a pronoun: “The writer will sit and eat with the subject and interview him [or her].”

What I learned:  Parallel Structure refers to the pattern intended as a way to organize a list.  The list should fit with the previous verb.  example: I need to water - the trees, flowers, and house plants. You could know you are using Parallel Structure right if you can list the items with the verb this way and it still makes sense:
I need to water the trees
I need to water the flowers
I need to water the house plants

ACT II and III of "A Raisin in the Sun"

  1. How is Beneatha dressed and behaving at the opening of Act II? Why do you think she is interested in Nigeria? Why do you think Walter participates, whereas Ruth is embarrassed, particularly once George arrives?
    1. She's dressed in cultural robes from Nigeria.  I think she's interested in Nigeria because she is interested in her ancestry.  Walter was drunk, I don't know why.  Maybe he felt compelled to try expressing himself too. Ruth was embarrassed when George arrives because walter was rude/insulting and was giving george trouble because he was rich and went to school. He didn't like his George's shoes either.
  2. Why is Walter so resentful of George? For example, what is he getting at when he says to him, “I see you all all the time – with the books tucked under your arms – going to your ‘clahsses.’ And for what! What the hell you learning over there? Filling up your heads - with the sociology and the psychology – but they teaching you how to be a man? How to take over and run the world? They teaching you how to run a rubber plantation or a steel mill? Naw - just to talk proper and read books and wear them faggoty-looking white shoes…”
    1. He's resntful because he feels he doesn't get to have a dream and the college kids have opportunity but don't know what to do with it.
  3. How are George and Asagai different? Consider George’s white shoes compared to Asagai’s Nigerian robes. In what ways are these items symbolic of the men themselves, and perhaps their own dreams?
    1. George is more of a socialite, aristocrat type. Goeroge isn't too romantic and did want bene going out in public in the robes.  Asagai is romantic, a bit of a dreamer like bene. He's okay in dressing bene in robs and taking care of her, he's a student (like george) but Asagai doesn't seem to keep up with George's wealth.
  4. She's overwhelmed.  We find out that having a nice house with space for everyone was her dream.
  5. How do you think it impacts Mama when Walter says, “So you butchered up a dream of mine – you - who always talking about your children’s dreams…?”
    1. He was making her feel guilty, She was probably hurt, confused, and didn't know how to talk to him.
  6. What does Mama mean when she says to Walter, “I say I been wrong, son. That I been doing to you what the rest of the world been doing to you…there ain’t nothing worth holding on to, money, dreams, nothing else – it if means- if it means it’s going to destroy my boy...?”
    1.  that there's nothing worth losing yourself over,  losing honesty, pride... money and dreams can't replace those things.
  7. What big decision does Mama make? Do you think this is the right decision? Why or why not?
    1. She puts money down on a house, and trusts the rest to walter.  I'm not sure if it was the right or wrong decision.  I think the fact that she used part of her money to buy her family a house made sense. I think that if walter didn't have the money then he would never have "grown into a man".  Maybe that was what walter needed.
  8. Although Travis does not have many lines, in what ways is his character significant?
    1. He shows the audience that the family is just beginning and that having future dreams are still fairly important, because kids=future.
  9. What is Karl Linder’s purpose for visiting the Youngers? How do the Youngers respond? How do you think you would respond were you in their situation?  Could something like this take place today?
    1. He wanted to buy them out of the neighborhood. The youngers were almost expecting it then thought they were on the same page for a moment, then kept their composure when they realized that Linder was telling them they don't fit in and the neighboors don't want them there (b/c of their color)
  10. What do we find out regarding what Walter did with the money? What is your opinion of Walter in this moment? How do you think the family feels in learning the money is gone? How do you imagine Walter feels?  In particular, how does Mama react to the news and why?
    1. He dind't go to the bank and he put it down on the liquor store.  He is a selfish lying rat. They are crushed and blame walter. He feels taken advantage of and is VERY angry. He realizes that he lost his father's earnings. Mama is VERY upset as well and prays for patience so she won't slap/yell Walter.
  11. Overall, how do you think the Youngers' environment has impacted their life?  How do you think the new environment is impacting them?
    1. I think they became a tight family, and their tiny space and enviromonet kept them dreaming of something better. I think the new environment is impacting then in a way that is testing their dream and their patience.  I think they are working much harder and are trying to hang on to their dream of living in a nice neighborhood and in a house with a garden even with everyone telling them they aren't welcome.

American Dream Photo Essay - Link

Here is the private link to my 500px.com "American Dream" Album:
https://500px.com/g/7052dd59ed06b5b022a57291aaa74d3c7b26fac35f3af0c1c1e54cd1c78768db

From Left to Right

1. The American Dream really changes from person to person and can also change based on their experiences.  There is usually common themes strung through the thought of "American Dream", but you really can't expect every person to be happy with a cookie cutter picture.  For example: At one time being married was part of my dream.  I have friends that never had Marriage in their dream.  I have friend that have a happy marriage and support each other, their dream continues to work for them.  As, time spent and my experience grew, this no longer stayed my dream. My dream is to break the chain and feel "free" to take care of myself and my family in the "dream" that I redefined.

Kravchenko, Andriy. Steel Chain with a Broken Link over Blue Background. 2016. 500px.com, n.p.

2. It was very clear that I could not continue putting work into something that was not benefitting me.  Being used, and taken advantage of was literally draining my my health. Legal papers never looked so good.  They became appealing in the sense that they bring opportunity.

XiXinXing. Papers in a Ring Binder. 2016. 500px.com, n.p.

3. In the sense of "opportunity" nothing is free in America.  Money is central to the American Dream.

Gordon. Money Background. 2014. 500px.com, n.p.

4. Money must to used to provide the basic necessities: food, water, heat, shelter, and clothing.  I remember becoming envious of my neighbors pantries when I was younger. I want to be able to buy healthy, quality foods, as part of my American Dream. This is very hard to do with the price of food rising.

Caia Images. Woman Pushing Full Shopping Cart in Grocery Store. 2015. 500px.com, n.p.

5. Some meals can be cheap. I don't mind spaghetti, and when I can hide vegetables in it for my kids, I know they are getting some of the nutrients they need.  Keeping them healthy and active is a joy to me.

Jovanovic, Jelena. Spaghetti. 2015. 500px.com, n.p.

6. Kids get sick so often.  Since they aren't the best at telling other people what they are feeling like, being able to take them to the doctor when they are sick is peace of mind.  Health Insurance is caught up in politics and affordable healthcare is not available.  Nothing is "affordable" in healthcare, but this is still part of our society and wanting the better option is part of my American dream.  I have a child that requires additional support and making sure he is off to the best possible start is my dream in action.

Toemkraisri, Linggnil. Health Insurance Claim Form. 2016. 500px.com, n.p.

7.  Getting my children their checkups to avoid a larger cost later, is great. The problem that can arise is the scheduling.  Being a single mom who works full time, this type of scheduling is always a challenge.

Hero Images. Woman Filling out Paperwork at Dentists Office. 2014. 500px.com, n.p.

8. Providing, clothing and shoes is a necessity.  As I was able to reach this dream for myself, I was able to find quality clothing and shoes, that I can trust to withstand abuse and use after use.  With my circumstances changing, I liked shopping and testing products, less and less. I always have buyers remorse now days.  I continue to get practical items, by keeping up with hand-me-downs and saving for nice pairs of snow boots.  This method is almost always better than actually buying new and my kids don't know the difference yet.

Tulian, Gabriela. When I First Met You, I Never Realized How Much You Would End up Meaning to Me. 2016. 500px.com, n.p.

9. My two girls share clothes.  I stopped sorting them after I folded them.  The clothes get mixed up anyway. All three kids have the clothes they need and although, right now, their american dream might be to have more dress up clothes, my dream (to keep the warm) is very much in rhythm right now.  Having other mom's to swap clothes with helps out greatly, otherwise I can see how expensive this dream can be.

Liviu, Pazargic. Little Girl Hanging Her Clothes to Dry. 2016. 500px.com, n.p.

10. Work, Work, Work, for the sake of opportunity and the American Dream! It's funny how a dream can have two complete polar opposites within it.  My American dream is to have time.  Family time, nap time, homework time, play time, ...free time. The other side is to provide for my family.   All of this work is tiring, but there's no time to nap yet.  This is still a dream I hope I can reach.

Caia Images. Serene Mother and Daughters Napping on Living Room Sofa. 2016. 500px.com, n.p.

11.  Having the time, to play with my children is important.  Mother's guilt is not part of my American Dream, but it feels like a mother must go through it in order to reach the other side of the dream.  At these points, The America dream doesn't seem as important.  Why continue on the path?  I think at this point a lot of mother's take a break from their ambitious dreams to follow the underbelly of it, the dream of having an American Family. Maybe dreams and motivations change, maybe the dreams stay the same and merely slow down, everyone is different.  An Adult being able to have time to spend with others is a result of either a very poor paycheck, or a very good paycheck that has be the accomplishment of a good career.

Jenkin, Aaron. Family Winter Vacation in Wales. 2015. 500px.com, n.p.

12.  Part of my dream is to be able to put down the money to have to children participate in sports and extracurricular activities. Sports and extra activities help build confidence, which they will each need to overcome their own issues and struggles. This is important in our American society because most parents work and independence is greatly valued. The parents don't always have the time to teach life lessons. Most times, even if parents do have the time, the kids will listen to their peers or coach better than their parents. Being creative in how to accomplish two goals at one time is a challenge that many people can understand.

Denims, Gable. Little League Team Cheering. 2014. 500px.com, n.p.

13. Letting a child play, nurtures their sense of identity. Part of my American dream is having capable children who can express themselves.

Altenburger, Andreas. Child Painting. 2014. 500px.com, n.p.

14. Allowing my children to learn about the diversity in America can enable understanding without dividing themselves. Helping them understand that opportunity is not usually dispersed fairly and we need to be grateful for what we have.  After we take care of ourselves we can help others.

Tomsickova, Tatyana. Christmas Stories. 2013. 500px.com, n.p.

15. Our society pushes education and we've come to accept that you have invest in yourself to get a good job to obtain your dreams. Many people don't know how to afford this and really don't have many options to disagree.  College graduation is a milestone in most people's American Dream.  My dream is to be a elementary teacher, however I do not dream of making poverty wages. This is one aspect of my dream where I need to practice my self negotiating skills.

Cuong, Nguyen. Special Moment Aplenty at Graduation Ceremony. 2016. 500px.com, n.p.

16. Education is important all around. As, I stated before, giving children a head start is very valuable. This will help children keep progress on track.

Milic, Igor. Teacher and Primary School Student Using Tablet. 2016. 500px.com, n.p.

17.  To keep my children on track for a higher standard, I recognize that I will need a better career.  My American Dream changed from years before and I have started going back to school.  I hope I manage a degree in Occupational Therapy so that I can contribute a little more to my children's future.
XiXinXing. Student Graduation Ceremony. 2016. 500px.com, n.p.

18. Part of my American Dream is to work with children.  I feel my purpose is to build confidence and give support in young children. I am looking forward to helping children in the school district through my Occupational Therapy Degree.
Caia Images. Physical Therapist Preparing Man in Wheelchair. 2016. 500px.com, n.p.

19. I really want a home.  I small, clean, comfortable home in a good neighborhood where I can build memories with my family. I feel that this is a further dream, as I am expecting not to reach it.  I do not make enough to afford my own place and extra money is being invested in my schooling. I figure the cost of living in Flagstaff is what it is.
Shake, Michael. Home. 2015. 500px.com, n.p.

20. This picture look like the cookie cutter American Dream to me. The space of a nice yard, is not attainable in flagstaff on one income, unless I have a better job.  I feel similar about this picture as the one before it.  These pictures I feel refer more to the unrealistic American Dream. These pictures reflect more on middle class Americans.
Herreid, Mark. Back Yard Wooden Swing Set. 2014. 500px.com, n.p.

21. I think that vacations are typical of middle class americans. Vacations and relaxation are part of my American Dream.  As, with my children I would like to be in a position to take mental and physical breaks that benefit our family relationships and health.  I figure if I reach my own American Dream of being in the middle class, I would definitely appreciate a vacation.

Suárez, Alberto. Complicity. 2015. 500px.com, n.p.

22. I appreciate everything I have right now and everything I lost and will continue to lose. There is a give and take rule that is always present.  There is always trade off in trying to maintain or accomplish an American Dream.  Everyone is trying to get ahead and compromise is important when you put yourself in the category of a million others. It's important to decide what you want and know what other people want.  Acceptance is greater at achieving happiness than toiling over a imaginary promise that you can do whatever you want and be whatever you want to be.

"A Raisin in the Sun - ACT I"

1. ...What is she trying to get him to see? Why do you think Walter is behaving in this way?
-She's trying to get him to see, how desperate his is getting/sounding.  I think walter is behaving this way because he wants to change. He wants to be 'successful'.  He is trying to keep his dream alive.  He feels he won't have another chance.

2.... what ways are Walter Lee and Beneatha similar? In what ways do they both differ from Mama?
-Beneatha and walter are similar because they are both dreamers, they both have aspirations, and what to achieve something. they both demonstrate a side (a stereotype) that they are trying to fight off.  Walter being a "subordinate, yes, sir - chauffeur" and Beneatha tying to live outside the "black woman - just get married and shut up" box.  They differ from Mama because they I think mama and even ruth have found peace and have settled for their lives - acceptance. I feel that Mama tries to work with what she had and does't take risks. She doesn't feel like she has to prove anything to people outside her family.

3....
-dreams are part of the story in ACT I because walter repetitively states that he has big plans, and he wants to be somebody, he wants to change.  Bene has goals of being a doctor - maybe the first female/black doctor. Mama recalls her dream of freedom and keeping a healthy family and finding a nice house where she can garden (when she was younger). Ruth, tries to sacrifice part of her future for the sake of Walter's dream, maybe even her own dream too.

4....What is conflict in terms of a story or play? After reading Act I, what do you identify as the main conflict of the play so far? How does this relate to each character’s dream?
-Conflict in terms of a story or play is a idea that leads to characters' struggles and can depth/drama to a story line.  It can demonstrate a purpose.   Money is the main conflict in the play.  Bene and walter feel they need money to 'get a break'.  Ruth feels like money is the only way she can afford a new baby.  mama feels like the money is a bad thing and it has torn her family apart and is making them act crazy.

5...What is a symbol in terms of a story or play? How can symbols/symbolism help tell a story or move the action along? What are some possible symbols from Act I that you think are/will be meaningful to the life of the play? What could these symbols mean?
- A symbol in terms of a story or play is something that means something similar-it draws an analogy.  Symbolism can help move a story along by helping the reading understand the emotion better.  In a way the reader can 'feel' what they might see. -symbols that I see are:
Plant=the life of the family, the history of mama
the check= being a future (bright or dark)
baby=struggle

6....Have you ever been faced with a decision, or tried to convince someone to make a decision, that seemed as if it would affect your whole life? If so, what was this like? If you’ve never actually been in such a situation, what do you imagine such a situation would be like?
- I didn't know which way this decision would go, but I knew there needed to be a decision made.  It was time for a change. As Mama said it in the play, when you get stuck you need to do something different.  It feels like a leap of faith, you don't know where you are going to fall and you don't know how long you will be in the whirlwind. ~

7...If you were Mama, what would you do with the money? Do you think she should give it to Walter Lee? Why or why not?
NO I wold not give it to walter lee.  I learn from my mistakes. ;) (or at least I like to think so).  This play is so ironic to be watching. This is my life ;) I feel so beat up just like everyone else in the play.  I'm really into this play.  GOOD JOB Ms. Hansberry!
I'd accept that I really am the only one grounded enough to take care of my family. Everyone else really is crazy at the moment. I would keep it for Safe Keeping.  I would like to help Bene, but only after she has done most of the work.  Say her last Semester or a nice big graduation gift towards something practical . I would spend it quite similar to Mama, but I would not give it to Walter. I could honestly, say I might give him a grand or so he'd stop crying(sorry that I'm not being sympathetic at the moment).

Revision Summary for Political Cartoon Essay

AS A BLOG POST - This is a summary of how you responded to your peers comments in your own revisions.  Please state what criticism you found valid and included and which criticisms you did not use and why.  This summary should also mention any revisions you made on your own.

-I am always insecure with writing, so I wanted to make sure I asked if my thesis was present and strong enough.

The criticism I received on that topic was that I could move a paragraph closer to the beginning of the introduction to use as my thesis/support my thesis.   I did use this suggestion

-I also tend to list things out apposed to having words "flow" so I wanted to make sure I could get enough transition sentences in the paper.

The criticism was that it was "hoppy"  ;).  I did take time to try to connect the paragraph a lot better.

-I used one of my peers papers to make sure I formatted mine right.   I hate Apple's word processing application, "Pages".  The fact that I couldn't just click a box and trust that my paper is formatted right was a headache.

I used all of my peers suggestions.

I changed a lot of my paper on my own.  I used more defining words, and tried to fix run on sentences.  I spent more time building supporting sentences.  I rearranged paragraphs to help the "flow"...  I also ended up putting my description of the cartoon in the paper, as suggested.
