1. ...What is she trying to get him to see? Why do you think Walter is behaving in this way?
-She's trying to get him to see, how desperate his is getting/sounding. I think walter is behaving this way because he wants to change. He wants to be 'successful'. He is trying to keep his dream alive. He feels he won't have another chance.
2.... what ways are Walter Lee and Beneatha similar? In what ways do they both differ from Mama?
-Beneatha and walter are similar because they are both dreamers, they both have aspirations, and what to achieve something. they both demonstrate a side (a stereotype) that they are trying to fight off. Walter being a "subordinate, yes, sir - chauffeur" and Beneatha tying to live outside the "black woman - just get married and shut up" box. They differ from Mama because they I think mama and even ruth have found peace and have settled for their lives - acceptance. I feel that Mama tries to work with what she had and does't take risks. She doesn't feel like she has to prove anything to people outside her family.
3....
-dreams are part of the story in ACT I because walter repetitively states that he has big plans, and he wants to be somebody, he wants to change. Bene has goals of being a doctor - maybe the first female/black doctor. Mama recalls her dream of freedom and keeping a healthy family and finding a nice house where she can garden (when she was younger). Ruth, tries to sacrifice part of her future for the sake of Walter's dream, maybe even her own dream too.
4....What is conflict in terms of a story or play? After reading Act I, what do you identify as the main conflict of the play so far? How does this relate to each character’s dream?
-Conflict in terms of a story or play is a idea that leads to characters' struggles and can depth/drama to a story line. It can demonstrate a purpose. Money is the main conflict in the play. Bene and walter feel they need money to 'get a break'. Ruth feels like money is the only way she can afford a new baby. mama feels like the money is a bad thing and it has torn her family apart and is making them act crazy.
5...What is a symbol in terms of a story or play? How can symbols/symbolism help tell a story or move the action along? What are some possible symbols from Act I that you think are/will be meaningful to the life of the play? What could these symbols mean?
- A symbol in terms of a story or play is something that means something similar-it draws an analogy. Symbolism can help move a story along by helping the reading understand the emotion better. In a way the reader can 'feel' what they might see. -symbols that I see are:
Plant=the life of the family, the history of mama
the check= being a future (bright or dark)
baby=struggle
6....Have you ever been faced with a decision, or tried to convince someone to make a decision, that seemed as if it would affect your whole life? If so, what was this like? If you’ve never actually been in such a situation, what do you imagine such a situation would be like?
- I didn't know which way this decision would go, but I knew there needed to be a decision made. It was time for a change. As Mama said it in the play, when you get stuck you need to do something different. It feels like a leap of faith, you don't know where you are going to fall and you don't know how long you will be in the whirlwind. ~
7...If you were Mama, what would you do with the money? Do you think she should give it to Walter Lee? Why or why not?
NO I wold not give it to walter lee. I learn from my mistakes. ;) (or at least I like to think so). This play is so ironic to be watching. This is my life ;) I feel so beat up just like everyone else in the play. I'm really into this play. GOOD JOB Ms. Hansberry!
I'd accept that I really am the only one grounded enough to take care of my family. Everyone else really is crazy at the moment. I would keep it for Safe Keeping. I would like to help Bene, but only after she has done most of the work. Say her last Semester or a nice big graduation gift towards something practical . I would spend it quite similar to Mama, but I would not give it to Walter. I could honestly, say I might give him a grand or so he'd stop crying(sorry that I'm not being sympathetic at the moment).
